Higher Education

The Green Ribbon Commission’s Higher Education Working Group (HEWG) convenes Boston’s colleges and universities to strengthen climate action within the sector and across the city.

Boston is home to one of the country’s greatest concentrations of higher education institutions, giving the sector a distinct role in the city’s climate transformation. Universities can contribute cutting-edge research to investment and policy decisions, prepare the workforce needed to implement climate solutions, and use their campuses as living laboratories for new technologies and approaches.

HEWG creates a forum for institutions to share strategies, address common challenges, and collaborate across sectors. Through research, education, campus operations, policy engagement, and workforce development, members help move climate solutions from ideas to implementation while supporting Boston’s broader climate goals.

Current Initiative

The HEWG is currently focused on accelerating the decarbonization of member heating and cooling systems and advancing the development of more robust Thermal Energy Networks in the Boston area.
