Cultural Institutions

The Green Ribbon Commission’s Cultural Institutions Working Group (CIWG) convenes a diverse network of arts, sports, historic, nature-based, and entertainment organizations in and around Boston. Together, these institutions are reducing emissions, preparing for climate impacts, and using their public platforms to build understanding and inspire action.

Boston’s cultural institutions are essential to the identity and vitality of the city. Many operate complex buildings, care for sensitive collections, and welcome large numbers of visitors as they face distinct climate risks that put them in a unique place for meaningful leadership opportunities. The CIWG supports members in sharing strategies for decarbonization, resilience, and institutional planning while addressing the operational challenges unique to the cultural sector.

These institutions also bring an important strength to Boston’s climate work: the ability to reach people in creative, accessible, and memorable ways. Through exhibitions, performances, programs, public spaces, and events, they can make complex climate issues more tangible and connect climate action to history, culture, science, and everyday life. By combining operational leadership with public engagement, the CIWG members help advance climate action within their own organizations and across the city.

Current Initiatives

The CIWG was formed in 2017 for the purpose of bringing Boston’s cultural institutions more prominently into advancing the city’s climate work. As part of the GRC, the CIWG offers connections to expertise, provides a common platform for learning about new ideas, and organizes member institutions to identify and pursue goals.
