Grid Modernization

The Grid Modernization Working Group convenes the City of Boston, the region’s major utilities, and large energy users with diverse building, transportation, and infrastructure needs. Together, they work to improve the planning and coordination required to modernize Boston’s electric grid and support electrification, decarbonization, and resilience.

Electrifying buildings and transportation is essential to achieving the climate goals of the City of Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and many of the region’s leading institutions. That transition will place new demands on the grid and require earlier information-sharing, more coordinated investment, and clearer approaches to infrastructure siting and implementation.

The Grid Mod Working Group provides a forum for the City, utilities, GRC members, and other participating organizations to align around future energy needs and identify practical opportunities for action. Its work includes building electrification, electric vehicle charging, distributed energy resources, grid infrastructure siting, planning and information-sharing protocols, policy and regulatory reform, and workforce needs.

By strengthening coordination among the organizations planning, building, and relying on Boston’s energy infrastructure, the working group helps move grid modernization from individual projects to a more integrated citywide strategy.
